Book Circles
The Groups meet each month to discuss a modern novel or work of non-fiction which has been chosen in advance by group members. A wide range of authors and topics is covered and a keen eye is kept on all those listed for Booker, Whitbread or Orange prizes.
We read the works of established writers as well as those of new novelists. Whilst we do not always agree on books, we learn from each other and usually find much for discussion and enjoyment.
Book Circle One - This group meets on the 2nd Wednesday afternoon of each month.
Book Circle Two - We meet on the 3rd Wednesday of the month.
Book Circle Three - The group meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 2.15pm
Bridge
Bridge for Beginners
Lionel Shields offers bridge tuition starting each September primarily for those who have little or no previous experience in the game. This follows a teaching plan set out and approved by the English Bridge Union, members being given prepared hands to bid and play and exercises to work on between sessions. There are currently three groups, at different levels, each meeting roughly monthly on Mondays at Lionel’s home in North Tonbridge. Anyone who wishes to refresh their basic knowledge of bidding and card play is invited to apply. Members are encouraged to continue playing as a group via monthly play sessions and to progress on to the other U3A bridge groups, or to local Clubs. (Current students number 40 in total).
Chicago
We meet for friendly bridge every three weeks on Wednesdays at 10.00 a.m. Meetings are held in the homes of those players who are able to accommodate three or four tables, but others are equally welcome to join the group.
Duplicate
The Group meet every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month to play friendly duplicate bridge. Partners are arranged at each meeting so individual players are welcome to join, particularly those who would like to get a taster of duplicate bridge. We play in the Goldsmid Hall, starting at 9.45 a.m. until about 12.15 p.m. Sometimes pre-arranged hands are set up to practise unusual play and compare with planned results. If you are interested, please telephone Adam or Ron. The annual subscription is about £10 to cover cost of hiring the Hall.
Bridge – Rubber
Meetings are held at different homes over the month normally weekly. We try to accommodate all who participate but, at the moment, we have a maximum of one or two tables at most houses. We normally play on a Friday either morning or afternoon depending on when members are able to accommodate us. I am afraid we are full at this time but will inform you through the monthly newsletter if and when this changes
Bus-Pass Ramblers
The aim of this group is to explore the surrounding area, making use of our bus passes to travel by bus but, perhaps, also using the trains. We organise a variety of expeditions, including country walks, town trails and visits to places of interest. We go out once or twice a month, with no set day. Members meet occasionally to contribute ideas when we draw up a programme for the coming months and those who wish to, volunteer to lead a walk or visit.
