Canasta
This small friendly group has now formed for enjoying the game of canasta. New members are welcome to the monthly meetings on the 1st Thursday of the month at 2.00pm.
Chess
We play twice a month and usually manage to have 4 sets played simultaneously at each session. The aim over several weeks is for every member to play every other member. There is a reasonable span of playing ability, with enjoyment and satisfaction as the end product. We also analyse positions and strategy.
We meet on a regular basis: 1st and 3rd Friday afternoons of each month starting at 2.00 p.m. and lasting for approximately two hours. The meetings are scheduled to take place either in Southborough or Tonbridge (currently Southborough).
Computers
Computer Multi-Media & Power Point
Tonbridge U3A has a laptop computer, scanner, projector and screen which can be used by members wishing to make presentations to their groups.
Enhanced presentations carrying pictures, maps and diagrams, etc. add an extra dimension to any talk, facilitate a structured delivery and increase audience understanding and enjoyment.
John Cave offers a free two hour training session in building the presentation, in its projection and additional support in finalising the work.
The training session comes complete with a full set of written ‘step-by-step’ notes which will guide even the least experienced wannabe silver-surfer.
For training, contact John Cave direct. To book the equipment, contact Joe King
Computer Sessions
Over the past few years, Tonbridge Grammar School has made its teaching computing facilities available to the U3A, under its Outreach programme, which makes outstanding contributions to the community. The school has provided opportunities for both those who want to start their progress in computer skills and for those who are already further advanced. No fees are required.
Mrs Caroline Ghali is the teacher in charge and members enjoy the chance also of meeting pupils who help us with the training. While the school is at present experiencing long-term building operations to improve facilities on the site, members are still able to carry out their training, fitting in both times and days, in term time, with what the staff can offer. We are grateful for the possibility to continue.
The sessions last one hour at a time and take place during the school term time.
Country Walks
The group meets on alternate Monday mornings throughout the year for 5 to 7 mile walks, usually circular, in the country. We also meet occasionally on the intervening Mondays for longer, 10 to 14 mile, walks. We walk generally in Kent, Sussex and Surrey although we occasionally walk in France and Belgium. Our walking rate is about 2 miles per hour. Group members are encouraged to lead walks, these can be taken from books or chosen from maps. We respect the Country Code and encourage car sharing to the starting point. We regret - no dogs.
New members are welcome and there is a small annual charge to cover administration costs.
The objective of the group is enjoyment; to enjoy exercise, to enjoy the countryside and enjoy the companionship of like minded people.

Summaries of the more interesting walks can be found on Reports on walks.
Croquet
This Group will meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from late-April to September, starting 2.00 p.m., at the Royal Tunbridge Wells Croquet Club in Calverley Grounds.
The objective will be to learn and ENJOY playing this most civilised and sociable of games in superb surroundings and great company. The only requirements from the participants are to wear flat-soled shoes (trainers or tennis shoes are fine) and pay a £3 green fee to the RTWCC for the equipment which is provided – mallets, balls, hoops and some of the best lawns in the country.
