Mah-jong
We meet every 3 weeks on a Wednesday 10.00-12.00 noon at The Methodist Hall, Higham Lane, Tonbridge. There is a free car park at the rear, off Hunt Road. The group plays at different levels. Teaching can be arranged for beginners. All abilities welcome. To cover the cost of hall hire is £8.75 per person for six months.
Maps (Cartography)
We meet on the 3rd Thursday of each month in the meeting room at Tonbridge Reference Library (first floor of the Library building). A map-related topic is announced in the Newsletter in advance of each meeting, but discussion can range widely.
Anyone interested in maps is very welcome to join us. Bring along anything map-related which is new or unusual and tell us about it!
Marc Chagall and Painted Glass
Patricia Dunkin Wedd gives periodic talks at All Saints, Tudely on the d'Avigdor Goldsmids and Chagall's glass.
Modern History
There are four groups for those with genuine interest in modern history.
Our format is quite traditional – lectures and printed notes – but members participate most actively in questions, comments and discussion. We conclude each year’s studies with lunch and a quiz. There is a small charge for photocopying of notes and maps.
Group I started in 2000 and meets fortnightly on Monday afternoons
Group II started in 2001 and meets fortnightly on Tuesday afternoons.
Group III began in 2007 and meets on the 1st Thursday of the month.
Group IV This group meets at 2.00 p.m. on the 3rd Thursday of each month. Each season we follow the history of a particular country or region; the meetings consist of a talk followed by lively discussions. The group is very popular but it is always worth contacting the leader as vacancies occasionally occur.
Music Appreciation
We meet each month, usually at 22, Mill Stream Place, off the Hadlow Road, Tonbridge, but please contact Derek and Barbara if you plan to come, in case a bigger venue has been arranged. We also have talks, e.g. by Robin Morrish about forthcoming musical events, e.g. Bach's St Matthew Passion, to be performed by Tonbridge Philharmonic Society in Tonbridge School Chapel, on 27th March 2010. We support Tonbridge Philharmonic Society and Tonbridge Music Club concerts and have occasional visits to the opera, the ballet and London concert halls. Details in the monthly Newsletter.
