Mah-jong
We meet every 3 weeks on a Wednesday 10.00-12.00 noon at The Methodist Hall, Higham Lane, Tonbridge. There is a free car park at the rear, off Hunt Road. The group plays at different levels. Teaching can be arranged for beginners. All abilities welcome. To cover the cost of hall hire is £8.75 per person for six months.
Maps
This small but enthusiastic group meet on the 3rd Thursday of the month in the Tonbridge Reference Library.
Meetings are always informal and anything to do with maps is likely to be discussed. No prior knowledge is assumed and members frequently bring along maps they have acquired, always of interest to the group.
Each session can act as a forum for the exchange of information or news concerning developments in cartography and allied fields. Although the meetings are not of a tutorial nature, it is hoped that members will be prepared to research suitable topics and present their findings for, perhaps, part of a session. New enthusiasts welcome.
Marc Chagall and Painted Glass
Patricia Dunkin Wedd gives periodic talks at All Saints, Tudely on the d'Avigdor Goldsmids and Chagall's glass.
Modern History
There are four groups for those with genuine interest in modern history.
Our format is quite traditional – lectures and printed notes – but members participate most actively in questions, comments and discussion. We conclude each year’s studies with lunch and a quiz. There is a small charge for photocopying of notes and maps.
Group I started in 2000 and meets fortnightly on Monday afternoons
Group II started in 2001 and meets fortnightly on Tuesday afternoons.
Group III began in 2007 and meets on the 1st Thursday of the month.
Group IV This group meets at 2.00 p.m. on the 3rd Thursday of each month. Each season we follow the history of a particular country or region; the meetings consist of a talk followed by lively discussions. The group is very popular but it is always worth contacting the leader as vacancies occasionally occur.
Music Appreciation
We meet each month, usually at 49 The Drive, Tonbridge. We have occasional live music but, more often, music on dvd, video or cd, presented by one of our members. We also have talks e.g. by Robin Morrish about a concert of sacred music he was about to conduct. We support Tonbridge Philharmonic Society and Tonbridge Music Club concerts and have occasional visits to the opera, the ballet and London concert halls. Details in the monthly Newsletter. See also Opera below.
Music from the Musicals
This group aims to enjoy musicals on CD/video. We meet at 10.00 a.m. on the 4th Thursday of the month.
Opera
We meet at 49 The Drive, Tonbridge, in most months, to watch an opera on dvd or video, e.g. Handel’s Julius Caesar, Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, Donizetti’s The Daughter of the Regiment and Verdi’s Il Trovatore. We occasionally go to the opera in London or at Glyndebourne. See also Music Appreciation above
