Dancing

Circle

The circle is an ancient and universal symbol of wholeness and unity. Dancing in a circle is one of the most ancient ways in which people celebrate community and togetherness.

We dance traditional dances from many diverse cultures but also dances that have recently been choreographed, to classical music or modern music from around the world. The dances can be meditative or lively, peaceful or playful, but always fun.

This group has been flourishing since 2003 and we always welcome new members. No previous experience or partner is required. Each dance is taught and "walked through" before we play beautiful music from around the world. Wear loose comfortable clothing and either dance in bare feet or soft flat shoes. Come and join us

We meet twice a month on the first and third Fridays of the month at the Fisher Hall, Lyons Crescent from 2 to 3.30pm. Periodically we hold a Circle Dancing Day (click for details).

Anne Armstrong who leads the group, provides more detailed information on its activities on her own website http://circledancewithanne.pbwiki.com.

The Annual Dance Day for 2008 will take place on Thursday 17 April 2008 from 11am to 4pm at the Goldsmith Hall Tudeley.

Country

Gentle Jane Austen style dancing to exercise the body and stretch the brain. No previous experience or a partner is necessary. Come and enjoy dances of a by-gone age walked through and danced with an experienced caller.

The Group normally meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month in St. James's Church Hall, Tunbridge Wells, from 2.00 to 4.00 p.m.

Croquet

This Group will meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from late-April to September, starting 2.00 p.m., at the Royal Tunbridge Wells Croquet Club in Calverley Grounds.

The objective will be to learn and ENJOY playing this most civilised and sociable of games in superb surroundings and great company. The only requirements from the participants are to wear flat-soled shoes (trainers or tennis shoes are fine) and pay a £3 green fee to the RTWCC for the equipment which is provided – mallets, balls, hoops and some of the best lawns in the country.

Digital Camera

Groups have been formed to help members with various aspects of digital photography and its related technology. The groups have been divided in to two -

Beginners

Aimed at those people who have recently acquired a digital camera. we will look at the process of composing a good picture, transferring images to a computer and many of the different functions and facilities available on the camera, as well the scope of the software programme which invariably comes with the camera. Very much a self help group where participation is welcome.

The group meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 2pm

Intermediate (Imaging)

An intermediate group for those with some knowledge of digital photography who wish to develop their skills by exchanging experiences with fellow users. It covers all aspects of digital photography including getting the best out of your camera and resulting image. Plus digital imaging, storing and presenting your photographs.

The group meets on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 2pm.

Embroidery

Two similar groups meet fortnightly on Thursday and Friday Mornings.

A different theme each year suggests a starting point for inspiration; then members decide, from research, what form their piece of embroidery will take.

Groups are suitable for beginners or those with experience - we learn from each other and from the many books available. Ideas are linked to historical examples where appropriate, and reference is made to other cultures and countries. Embroidery is a far wider subject than most people realise and offers opportunities  to develop existing skills and to learn new ones.

A good stock of threads. fabrics. beads and other embellishments is maintained which anyone is welcome to use in exchange for a modest donation to the 'kitty' kept to replenish supplies.

Beginners who have joined us in recent years have been surprised at what they have, with help, been able to achieve. We all really enjoy learning and creating and making new friends at the same time.  There are vacancies for more members.

Exploring London on Foot 1

With easy access to arguably the most interesting and historic city of the world, this friendly group was formed in 2000, so that we might find out more about London, in the company of like-minded people.

Our members, individually or in small groups, take it in turn to choose, plan and lead the Monthly Walks, the dates of which vary. Also, on every 3rd Friday of the month we have our Walk Talk Meeting at The Goldsmid Hall, Tudeley, during which we make plans for future Walks. After coffee, we continue with a London Studies session. We pay for room hire, refreshments (about £5 P/A) and of course our own travel expenses.

For examples of our activities click onto Exploring London Events page.

Exploring London on Foot - 2

This group meets on the 1st Thursday of the month for a walk in London. Members of the group take it in turns to research an area, do a pre-walk, find a suitable venue for lunch and sort out travel arrangements prior to the walk. They submit the necessary details to be included in the monthly newsletter.

Exploring London on Foot - 3

A new group formed in October 2008.   We started our walks in November 2008 and have decided to walk on the third Wednesday or Thursday on alternate months.   Our members meet at Tonbridge station about ten minutes before the planned train.

Details of the date and leaders for that month’s walk are published in the Newsletter.  The walks are planned by the leaders for that particular month and include a break for lunch.   As with Group 2 it is kept informal.   We just do the walk once a month with no ’walk talk’ meeting.   We do have an excellent member Judith Sands who does a really professional write-up with added photos of each walk for a record of our walks (see below).   This is distributed to members who have email addresses.
