Galleries, Museums and Exhibitions
This group is for those who enjoy learning more about art and craft through visiting the above places. The group will be visiting a gallery, exhibition or museum on the 1st Friday of the month. The venue will be published in the newsletter with the time and place to meet. When we use cars, we take turns to use our vehicles. If we visit an exhibition at the National Gallery, we will go on a Tuesday afternoon as pensioners get reduced fees at this time. If any member hears of a venue they think is of interest, we will arrange a visit. People are asked to telephone me if they are coming.
For further information, please telephone Margaret Pavlidis.
Garden Visits
This group visit gardens based on the NGS yellow book on the 4th Wednesday of the month in summer but we are thinking of some weekend visits this year. Thus, our visits are varied and always enjoyable. Tea is taken when available. All welcome. Costs vay between £2.50 and £5.00.
Geology (Earth Sciences)
No previous knowledge is required to join this new, small and very enthusiastic group. Many people will be surprised to discover how well-informed they are already.
The aim is to make each session a complete study in itself, so that new members can join at any time and existing participants need not be too concerned at missing the occasional meeting. However, in time we will have covered a full basic course in geology (at least to 'A' level).
Geology is essentially an integrative science, bringing together many elements from the basic sciences like physics, chemistry and biology. It has many of its own concepts and sometimes a complex vocabulary, but jargon will be kept to a minimum. Knowledge of this subject will obviously do much to aid our understanding of, and care for, the planet Earth, to appreciate its finite resources and help us to make informed judgements concerning some of the major global issues such as climate change and sustainability. It will add pleasure and interest to holidays, and furthermore, will make a walk up Tonbridge High Street even more enjoyable.
Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at 2pm in the Tonbridge Reference Library.
German Conversation
The group is designed for those with at least a modest working knowledge of written and spoken German. Consequently, but unfortunately, this class would not be suitable for beginners. We practise to improve our conversational skills and have tips on grammar, pronunciation and the German way of life from native and experienced speakers. The group usually meets on the last Tuesday of the month, from 10.30 to 12.30 p.m., at a member’s home.
The Great Bear
We explore the lives and works of scientists, philosophers, explorers, actors, saints, artists and many more. We loosely base our choices on the work of art by Simon Patterson, called The Great Bear (hence our name). This work was exhibited at the Tate Modern and is based on the London Underground map in which each underground line represents a ‘profession’ and each station on the line an ‘individual’ of that profession.
We take it in turns to give a talk to the other members about our chosen topic at very friendly monthly meetings, which are held in the morning on the last Monday of the month at the Goldsmid Hall, Tudeley.
Greek
We are a small but happy band meeting Friday mornings, weekly whenever possible, chez Fiona Cauter in her new home. Now in our 4th year, having [re]started from scratch, preparing for GCSE in summer 2009. Just begun Homer, Odyssey Book 9 – Cyclops story.
